Thanks to all the organising by one of our teachers, Aoife McGonigle, for putting together a really fantastic Heritage Week. Heritage Ireland were so impressed by all the wonderful activities taking place in our school that they sent out facilitators to lead some great workshops. They even featured our school on their website detailing all the great heritage and history being explored throughout the week. Check it out in the link below!

We learned about the different types of homes and house, how we use electricity in our homes, homes from long ago and we read and dramatised the story of 'Town Mouse, Country Mouse. We were busy bees during our Aistear exploration of this topic. We constructed houses and cities with recycled materials, clay and sand. We in role as builders and the characters from our story of 'Town mouse, country mouse in our role play and small world and we wrote letters to the characters too! Roisin's mum, Caroline, told us all about Roisin's great grandfather who was a soldier. We saw a picture of him in his uniform. We also discussed other artefacts belonging to Roisin's family. They were so interesting! Jessica brought in artefacts that are special to her family that her mum got from travelling. We love history in Willow class! A huge thank you to our school community that helped us fundraise for an amazing skipping workshop. Each class got to learn new skipping skills and many students got to show off these new skills in a whole school display. Check out the videos on our YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/user/PowerstownETNSVideos?app=desktop With our aim of achieving the Active School Flag this year the school has organised for all children to take part in a super active skipping workshop!
What is it? The aim is to introduce children and teachers to the world of skipping. Skipping is a terrific form of exercise that helps a child’s agility, balance, hand-eye co-ordination and can increase speed through footwork. It teaches children about rhythm and when put into team routines, it provides them with team work skills and encourages them to have confidence in their sporting ability. It is a great way to exercise, maintain good health while having lots of fun. When is it? The workshop will take place over two days, Monday 21st January. Every class will take part in a 40 minute workshop, and on Tuesday there will be a skipping masterclass by the instructor for all children to watch! How much will it cost? The cost per child for the workshop will be €2.50. Also, there will be ropes available for the children to buy should they wish - each rope will cost €6. Payments can be made online via the Aladdin App. PETNS Next week is Heritage week in our school. We celebrate our shared and family histories through the week and look, compare and contrast what life was like in the past and now. We were hoping that if any family had a special artefact or heirloom they would like to show the children that they could come into our class on Friday, January 25th to show it. It could be something that a family or household would have used long ago or even a special piece of family history like a photograph, piece of jewellery or any other significant heirloom.
The children will be encourage to speak about their heritage and family history throughout the week also so if there any special stories unique to their families or history that you would like them to share you can email these to me also at [email protected] Well done to Dalal in Willow class for winning handwriter of the month for the month of December! Dalal has worked super hard to write clearly, neatly and accurately using her cursive writing. A sample of her writing will be up on our super handwriting board across from the hall. We're so proud of you Dalal!
